Thanks for taking the time to explore the painterly world of Jonathan Cusick.

Jonathan is a versatile painter whose approach balances caricature and naturalism, maintaining a believable, irreverent reality. A supremely capable caricaturist and illustrator, he sometimes produces distinctive portraits. His sketch blog might also interest you.

Since graduating with a first in Illustration Jonathan has illustrated many prominent magazines and notable advertising campaigns, including The Times, Sainsbury’s Magazine, Random House, Independent on Sunday, Toblerone, Men’s Health, The Guardian, BMP DDB, New Statesman, Daily Mirror, BBC Music magazine, Asda Magazine, Euromoney, Lowe Lintas, Express Newspapers, and extensive work for the Radio Times. Since March 2007 he has illustrated Caitlin Moran's television column in The Times. His work was brought to life by Hibbert Ralph Animation (courtesy of ad agency Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper) for Cadbury Coronation Street TV sponsorship, and Jonathan also contributed to a Virgin Money online ad campaign (watch some of the finished animations on the relevant pages). His work has been exhibited in the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall Galleries, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, and at the Shire Hall, Stafford. His first solo exhibition was held at the Coningsby Gallery, London, in 2005. Those of you who missed it can take a virtual walk around the show here.

His work has won a number of awards. During his art education, in 1995, Jonathan was awarded the British Cartoonist’s Association and The Times Young Cartoonist of the Year (Under 30), being given the overall award despite his entry in the under 18 category. In 1998 this was followed by a British Design and Art Direction (D&AD) Student Award (Illustration) and in 1999 the Association of Illustrators Student Award. In November 2007 he was given the Cartoon Art Trust Award for Caricature, which was presented to him by Prunella Scales. His work has regularly been selected for the AOI’s 'Images' annuals, which he has also Judged. At the tender age of eight, a self portrait was awarded a runners-up prize in a 'Portland Bill' TV Times drawing competition, possibly giving him the taste for glory...

He also attended the Prince of Wales’ Drawing Studio in Shoreditch (see the portraits section), where he was lucky enough to meet the Prince. He appeared impressed, enthusiastically describing Jonathan's work as being ‘remarkable'. There is, as yet, no word on the Knighthood though.
A number of subjects have purchased Jonathan's paintings of themselves, including the late DJ John Peel, Antique eccentric David Dickinson, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Michael Parkinson, Raymond Blanc, Heston Blumenthal, Comedian Ben Miller, and Queen legend Brian May. He has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Midweek with Libby Purves, BBC Radio WM, and ''Noel's And the Winner is...' (BBC1). In September 2002 the Sunday Times Magazine featured him as one to watch out for.
